Stories about the valley: its history, what is happening now and what is coming, and why it is worth a weekend or a whole week.

An hour from Cape Town and a world away. Ten things that make the valley worth a weekend.

Why a week works so well here, with a plan that mixes slow village days and day trips within the hour.

A short timeline of the valley: an expedition, a wine farm, a hotel, two prime ministers, a painful removal and a wine revival.
Two villages, Riebeek Kasteel and Riebeek West, at the foot of the Kasteelberg. Wheat, vines and olives, about an hour from Cape Town.
Riebeek Kasteel sits on the eastern slope of the Kasteelberg, where the Swartland's wheatlands meet vineyards and olive groves. The village is small enough to walk: a square, a historic hotel, galleries, tasting rooms and long lunches on shaded stoeps.
The seasons change the colour of the valley. Green wheat and yellow canola in late winter and spring, gold stubble in summer, harvest in February and March, and the olive pressing in autumn. Summer days are hot and dry; winter brings the rain.
From here the Winelands, Tulbagh, Darling and the West Coast are all within an hour's drive, which is why the calendar on this site reaches out to about 80 km.
