A food lover's guide to Riebeek Kasteel

For a village of a few thousand people, Riebeek Kasteel has a surprisingly varied food scene. Most restaurants are on or near the square, so you can choose where to eat on the evening itself, although booking at weekends is wise.

The Royal Hotel, one of the oldest hotels in the province, has a long veranda that is perfect for lunch or an early evening drink. Next door, Au Bouchon Rouge brings a touch of France with its brasserie dishes and patisserie.

Café Felix serves a wide range of meals in a courtyard under a 150-year-old oak tree. The Barn on Kerk Street offers Mediterranean food and a terrace with views over the village and the mountains. La Parrilla is the place for Latin American grilled meat, and Rusty Cantina for tacos and tequila.

For breakfast and lunch, try Panera Bakery & Bistro for artisan bread and brunch, or Beans About Coffee on Fontein Street. Out at Eight Feet Village, Mura and Die Deck have views over the valley. And in 2026 a Japanese restaurant, Saisei, opened in the village, serving ramen with a smoky miso broth.

Restaurants change, so check opening times before you go. But whatever you choose, end the meal with a walk back through the quiet streets of the village. It is one of the nicest parts of the evening.
