Mullineux and the new generation of Swartland winemakers

Small cellars, big reputations: how young producers put the region on the world map.

Mullineux and the new generation of Swartland winemakers

Twenty years ago, few wine lovers outside South Africa knew the name Swartland. Today its wines appear in serious lists and magazines around the world, thanks largely to a new generation of winemakers.

Among the best known are Chris and Andrea Mullineux, who settled in Riebeek Kasteel and built a reputation for Chenin Blanc and Syrah. Their Single Terroir wines are made from vineyards on specific soils, such as schist and granite, so you can taste how the ground shapes the wine.

They are part of a broader movement: producers such as Eben Sadie, AA Badenhorst, Porseleinberg and others share a focus on old vineyards, natural winemaking and Mediterranean grape varieties. Many cooperate closely, and the region has a strong sense of community.

Some of these producers have limited visiting hours or receive guests by appointment only. Mullineux & Leeu, for example, offers tastings on the first Friday of the month, booked in advance. Check before you go, and book early.

If you can't get an appointment, look for their wines in the village wine shops and on restaurant lists in Riebeek Kasteel. Tasting them where they are made is part of the pleasure.
